What are the details of the online Self-Paced Spanish 1 or Spanish 2 class?

Self-Paced Spanish 1 and Self-Paced Spanish 2 are highschool level classes for homeschool students. They are each designed to be a full school year course. Your student should take Spanish 1 before Spanish 2.

What's the recommended age/grade range for these classes?

8th - 12th grade (or at least 13 years old)

Are parents required to purchase a textbook and workbook for the class?

Yes. The homework guides students through the BJU Press Spanish textbook and activity book. These books are necessary to complete the homework. The exact required books will be communicated via email once your student is registered.

Where will my student watch the class videos and see the suggested homework?

I use Canvas as a virtual "homeroom" for a student's online class. Everything is there - the class recordings, the suggested homework, the tests, office hours, and the inbox where students can ask me questions.

How long is each class video?

Each class video is between 35 and 50 minutes long.

What is homework like?

After watching that lesson's class video, suggested homework includes (depending on the week):

- listening exercises from the textbook and activity book

- writing and reading exercises

- flashcard vocabulary practice

- recording an audio in Spanish

- listening to a conversation

- taping Spanish labels all around the house 😉

- watching a video

- drawing a picture

What is the average homework time per class video?

After watching the class video (videos are approximately 35-50 minutes long), your student will begin working through the suggested homework. It will take students a total of approximately 3 to 5 hours to complete the homework. I suggest they spread it out over several days.

How often does a student take a test?

Students take written and oral exams approximately every two chapters. Tests are taken in the online platform and are graded by the teacher.

Are students issued an end-of-class grade?

Yes, students receive an end-of-class grade in their grade book online. This serves as an independent evaluation of a student's performance and is based on the tests your student takes in the class platform.

Is the teacher available to answer questions?

Yes! On the class platform, students can send me a message (written, audio, or video) to ask questions or practice pronunciation. I will send a written or video message back to answer questions or provide feedback on pronunciation.

Are there office hours?

Yes, I offer a weekly office hour (the day and time changes each week to accomodate as many student schedules as possible!). This is a laid-back opportunity for students to practice conversation, do homework together, or ask me questions.

What does a parent need to do for this class?

Parents do not have to do any grading or anything else for classes. However, it is helpful to be aware of what students are doing and keep them on track with class videos and homework.

Will my student practice speaking?

Yes! Speaking is an essential part of learning Spanish and very important to me. Part of the suggested homework after each class video is to record an audio in Spanish (with a prompt I give them). This is a great chance to practice pronunciation and speaking and I will provide feedback once a student submits an audio.

Additionally, during the class videos, I often ask the student to pause the video and practice specific pronunciation or a set of sentences. I suggest that students take this seriously and practice speaking out-loud!

How many months will it take my student to complete Spanish 1 or Spanish 2?

You are welcome to go at your student's pace (hence the name "Self-Paced"! 😎).

To give you a ballpark idea, Spanish 1 is designed to be full school year classes (approximately 9 months), with breaks for holidays.

Spanish 2 is designed to be a separate full school year, to be completed after Spanish 1.

If you want to complete either of these courses in a school year, your student should watch one class recording (and do the corresponding homework) every week or every 10 days. There are 25 class recordings total. â€‹

What will students know after successful completion of this class?

In both Spanish 1 and Spanish 2 classes, we will cover reading, writing, speaking, listening, and grammar. Your student will learn how to introduce themselves appropriately, ask questions, and talk about school, their hobbies, their preferences, their family, and more. They will also learn about Spanish-speaking countries and cultures.

How much does it cost?

Self-Paced Spanish 1 = $190

Self-Paced Spanish 2 = $190

For $190, you'll receive access to the course for 15 months. This includes:

  • Access to all of the class recordings (25 videos)

  • Access to weekly office hours (once a week on a varied schedule)

  • The chance to turn in homework audio recordings and receive teacher feedback

  • Suggested textbook and workbook homework to complete after each class recording

  • Tests (written and spoken) graded by the teacher

  • Study guides for each test

  • Access to me! (Send me a message any time to ask a question. I'll respond with a written message or a video if you need help with pronunciation or otherwise!)

What if I have more than one child?

The $190 registration fee (for either Spanish 1 or Spanish 2) is for one student in your family. Additional students in your family can be registered for $30 each, giving them access to their own account, office hours, audio homework feedback from the teacher, and test grading by the teacher.

Do you teach "Spain Spanish" or "Latin American Spanish" and is there much difference?

Since I lived in Spain (read more about me here), you may be wondering whether I'll be teaching Spain (Castilian) Spanish or Latin American Spanish - and how different they actually are. My accent and the vocabulary I use is Castilian, so that is what students will mostly hear in the class recordings. That said, the differences between the two variations are not many! The Spanish language is generally understood by any Spanish speaker worldwide. Plus, the textbook teaches a lot of Latin American vocabulary, which is what your students will be working with on a daily basis as they study.

I will be able to point out to students how my accent differs from what they might hear in Latin America as well as some of the variations in vocabulary.

The difference between Spain Spanish and Latin American Spanish is comparable to the differences in the English language as spoken in the United States, the United Kingdom (UK), Canada, Australia, etc.

Do you teach with a Christian worldview?

I teach Spanish in my classes :) However, as a Christ-follower, I teach with a Christian worldview and occasionally use a Bible verse in my class or discuss how we can learn more about the Lord as we study another language, learn from other cultures as we learn their language, and bless others by speaking another language. The textbook also approaches Spanish from a Christian worldview.

If I need to cancel my registration, what's your cancellation policy?

If you cancel within the first two weeks of your access to the self-paced class, you will receive a 50% refund OR you can choose to receive 100% refund in the form of credit that can be used for my other classes (this credit does not expire).

After the first two weeks of access to the course, there is no refund or credit.

Are there any prerequisites for this class?

There is no pre-requisite for Spanish 1, though I suggest that students are at least 13 years old.

For Spanish 2, a student must have successfully completed Spanish 1 with a C grade or better. If they completed Spanish 1 on their own or with another teacher and you want to see if they're ready for Spanish 2, feel free to send me an email and we can chat!
